University of Hartford

Senior Machine Shop Manager

Working in the machine shop and makerspace at the University of Hartford came about somewhat unexpectedly. A professor I had built a rapport with casually mentioned the opportunity in passing, and it immediately felt like a natural fit. These were already spaces where I spent a significant amount of time, tinkering in the machine shop, studying, and collaborating on group projects in the makerspace. I saw the role as a chance to contribute to environments I genuinely valued.

Working alongside the machine shop supervisor was a unique experience, particularly because the school was in the process of rebuilding and improving the space. As a result, I took on a wide range of responsibilities, from setting up machines and organizing supplies to sorting through unused equipment and assisting with various faculty requests.

In the makerspace, my role was more directly student-facing. I supported fellow engineering students by helping refine project ideas, offering guidance on coursework, and assisting with tools such as 3D printing. At the same time, I helped maintain a productive, collaborative, and safe environment conducive to learning and creativity.
